Behavioral Threat Assessment Training

Kevin Smith, the founder and principal of SMITH STRATEGICS, has delivered behavioral threat assessment training to thousands of security stakeholders over the past 11+ years.

These security stakeholders include law enforcement personnel from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, the Major Crimes Division and Threat Management Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Crisis Intervention Team of the San Francisco Police Department, military personnel, educators, school and campus administrators, university threat assessment team members, corporate and private security personnel, mental health professionals, and human resources personnel.

Smith has created and developed the curriculum of a behavioral threat assessment training class for active shooter prevention which has been certified by the California Commission in Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Behavioral threat assessment is a research and evidence-based tool designed to

  • identify persons with the intent and capability to perpetrate targeted and terrorist violence, including active shooter and mass casualty attacks;
  • assess the risks posed by an individual on the pathway to targeted and terrorist violence; and
  • manage the risk of violence, prevent attacks, protect any targets, and reduce the likelihood of future violence.

Smith focuses his training efforts on developing and deploying training modules designed to equip security stakeholders with the knowledge and skills to proactively prevent active shooter and mass casualty attacks, including lone actor and ideologically-motivated attacks.
