Advanced Threat Assessment: K-12 School Safety Training

Kevin Smith, founder and principal of SMITH STRATEGICS, has created and developed the curriculum of an advanced threat assessment training class for K-12 school safety which has been certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

This 8-hour course is designed for K-12 school safety professionals and stakeholders, including law enforcement, SROs, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, mental health professionals and other school district personnel with security responsibilities.

The course is designed to equip attendees with the skills and tools necessary to conduct evidence-based behavioral threat assessments in the K-12 school setting.

The course will focus on a proactive approach to preventing school targeted violence and address the unique challenges posed by a potential school-based violent threat.

The course will help attendees identify and apply appropriate threat management strategies, including mental health, administrative, civil and criminal strategies.

The course will also address youth radicalization and extremism in schools, including an examination of nihilistic violent extremist (“NVE”) threats and the True Crime Community (“TCC”).

The course concludes with Interactive Threat Simulation™ exercises during which attendees will conduct assessments of realistic school-based threat scenarios from initiation to conclusion while receiving instructor feedback.
